Business Development Manager – North America

Our client is looking for a Business Development Manager to grow our market share in North America. It is a leading manufacturer and distributor of branded raw materials for supplements, sports nutrition, and wellness products. They are common ingredients in human and animal supplements to promote joint health. It is focused on adding value for our customers through two distinct propositions:

  • Sustainability – It manufactures and distributes a branded glucosamine that is made from non-GMO corn instead of traditional extraction from shellfish. This process uses dramatically fewer resources while also addressing allergen and kosher issues inherent in shellfish based products.
  • Value-added – having been a manufacturer of glucosamine for over 20 years, we’ve created formulations for specific finished dose applications that out-perform any competitive offerings. Customers save money through higher yields, fewer additives, and less equipment maintenance while creating better quality products.

While glucosamine is our flagship product, we are using our expertise in processing to add other raw materials to our portfolio. We also manufacture and sell chondroitin sulfate which is often combined with glucosamine in finished products as well as green tea extract and gingko biloba extract.

Their market share for glucosamine in North America is lower than in other parts of the world and so there is significant growth opportunity. Additionally the company is aggressively growing as a global supplier of ingredients for health and wellness.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Cold call, follow up on leads, and leverage industry contacts to build glucosamine volume. This will be through value-added propositions to manufacturers and brand owners and moving them away from treating glucosamine as a commodity.
  • Build the brand by adding co-branding partners
  • Identify gaps in the market for raw ingredient processing (ie challenges in granulating, milling, or coating certain powders) that are areas where we can add value and increase our product offerings.
  • Manage a small portfolio of existing customers with growth potential
  • Travel to trade shows as necessary
  • Possible international travel for training when rules allow

Preferred candidate will:

  • Have 3-5 years experience selling supplement ingredients.
  • Have the ability to balance aggressive sales skills with communicating technical and value-added information.
  • Live near a major airport and be able to travel in the US and Canada
  • Be able to work from a home office, independently manage time and multiple priorities
  • Be able to work well in a remote work environment through video conferences
